Now and again a total stranger would ask Mara, as she was in her own world thinking deeply about something: "what's wrong?" Or they would say: "smile!" It always took her completely by surprise.
The intensity of her look here is another example of how expressive her face was. Taken in Annapolis in 2004.

Oh my god, I remember that look so well.....it was usually accompanied by a loud, resounding "huh" noise that Mara used to make. Brings me back to the early 90s, when we would sit together at the Vienna Cafe in Sofia's Sheraton Hotel, sharing a Herald Tribune crossword puzzle....trying to figure out the answers, I would often look up and see this look on Mara's face, and of course, the famous "huh," which shortly after her, I started to say whenever I heard or saw something that confused me.
