As I wrote, once I had shaved my hair off, I felt a lot better about myself. Here are some photos of the new look -- hats and scarves. David calls it my Vermeer look. David and I visited a kind of "cancer hat store" at Sloan-Kettering and I bought a bunch of comfy bandanas and soft cover-ups for the head. My head gets so cold at night. I had forgotten about that from the last time being bald! I am aware, by the way, that two of these photos are sideways -- but I am posting it anyway. The reason I am so behind on posts is that I am having a lot of trouble attaching photos and I often give up. So now that these are attached, here they are.

David's right re: Vermeer. You are gorgeous in that orange-red scarf.
Coming up to NYC late next week for meetings. Let me know if I can bring anything (cause I know how limited NYC is compared to DC ;-} ).

I love the look in the second picture, and it does my heart/brain good to see you smiling.
Again, I really hope you're using your support network...I know you're not a shy, retiring flower, but I certainly wish/hope that you are able to say things like, "I really need a hug right now."

Yes, David's right, with a pearl earring, on a book cover, you'd be a smash hit. (Of course, you are anyway). And Lisa's right (previous entry)--it took special courage to share all that.
How lovely to see the scarf from Kristina's wedding in its new incarnation. Then it enhanced your chest and shoulders, now it glorifies your head and especially your eyes. Sending so much love from points east & west (tutta la famiglia).
Mara, dearest, you are so BEAUTIFUL! I was missing your up-dated wrap-ups badly (I guess everybody did!), now I see it was worthwile!
I hope you feel the way you look! Endless love from all of us, my darling!

And, I meant to say that I was waiting for your hair to fall out. If the radiation hadn't worked on your hair cells, it wouldn't have worked on your cancer cells. So, this comes with a good housekeeping seal of approval!!!
Vermeer would have been lucky to have such soulfilled eyes to paint. The gypsy in you is coming out, and it's great!
New lines to use with David on your next hat/scarf shopping trip: "Is it me? Does MY hat make YOUR ass look big?" Be sure to say it very loud in public, he'll enjoy it.
Your coloring looks a lot better than a few weeks back, hope this is so.
Your friends' comments are so wise, almost as wise as your own.

You look gorgeous, as everyone else has said, and not the least bit puffy! Your posting about your hair loss was so moving - I'm glad there is a place for you to share this with all of us. Here's a big hug from DC, and I'll send you a link to some fun Kosovo pictures as soon as I can!
xoxo
Judy
The pictures could be posted upside down and you would look as gorgeous as you do!
Hugs,
Claudia
Mara, you look fabulously beautiful! I don't know what you are talking about with the puffiness. I don't see it at all. All I see is your contagious smile.
Funny, I was thinking of you and your nail salon possy earlier as I was attempting to polish my big toes. Not much sleep in the past couple of nights so I'm exhausted. I took the nail polish remover, dabbed it on a tissue and started rubbing my eyes as if to take off my makeup. You should have heard my pathetic yell and ridiculous laughter at myself.
Anyway, just thinking about you and sending lots of love.
Blanche
Mara,
Ditto. Ditto. Ditto. You look fabulous, Mara. It is your eyes and that big, beautiful smile that really capture everyone's attention. Miles and I read your hair cutting news today. He was a bit puzzled as to why your hair was falling out. He asked if you missed it. He LOVED the picture of you in that red scarf. He immediately wanted a scarf for his head. He got a bandana and wore it proudly on your behalf.
We send hugs your way,
Karen and Miles Scriven
Mara, you are as pretty and delightful as you were when I first knew you when you were 4 years old. You have the charisma and talent for attracting friends, just as you did then when you called all your friends (yourself) to invite them to your 5th birthday party.
You warm my heart, always
Love, Robin H.

You know, I wasn't going to comment again so soon after my last one, but reading these lines from your friend Liz, I just had to:
"'Is it me? Does MY hat make YOUR ass look big?'
Be sure to say it very loud in public, he'll enjoy it."
This made me laugh out loud - particularly now that I have a teenage son who basically doesn't want me to BREATHE in public if I'm with him ;-). That comment, plus the fact that David has aunts and uncles in Boston still living in houses their family built(!), plus the fact that he has an adorable young relative named Susannah with an h (never see that anymore!) make me think that at least on the American side, he must come from about as Yankee/WASP-y a background as you can get. You guys are clearly a fascinating duo ;-).
I am so glad you're feeling better darling, and that you two had such a lovely, relaxing time in Maine. There's nothing like northern New England in the late summer/early fall - something very ancient, mysterious and wise about that landscape. Anytime I'm up there I half expect Sasquatch to come strolling out of the woods ;-).
Love, Lisa
Love seeing those gorgeous eyes and signature Mara smile.
STRONG and BEAUTIFUL!!!! XOXO
Vermeer indeed!
You know, from a friend "in the bussiness" I heard that in Holland bald heads, a good make-up and flashy earrings are the thing...
but you are a good wrapper-upper
good nose, also

Beautiful Mara,
I have been lurking on your blog for weeks now and it's high time I register my voice; the graceful shape of your head deserves it, not to mention you, the incredible blogger. You have been on my mind constantly and I am so grateful to have all your words and photographs to give shape to my thoughts. We're sending so much love from Chicago, also channeling the good vibes coming your way from Los Angeles and Istanbul. Let me know if you have any special wishes from this particular corner of the map.
Love to you,
Didi Cosentino
Beautiful, beautiful Golden Eyes! Are you aware of how beautiful you really are?
Hugs and kisses,
Zlatna + the boys
Did you ever see Sally's hair loss poem "This fall I am deciduous"? It's pretty great...
Lots and lots of love,
Sally, Pete, Emily and Susannah
