This is David Mees jumping in from Amman. Mara is in the hospital. Her condition has deteriorated over the past few days. She can barely talk and has largely lost the use of her right hand. Scans have revealed that the lesions in her brain --though the cells may be dead-- have blood inside of them. They are larger than before and the biggest one is 3cm in diameter. Surgery has been scheduled for tomorrow to remove that one. The neurosurgeon told Mara and Carol that he is confident that the operation will not leave Mara impaired. If all goes well, Mara is expected to remain in the hospital for three more days, the first day in intensive care. She will stay in New York for a week, then may go back to Washington.
As if this weren't bad enough, yesterday we learned that last Thursday's CT scan also revealed that the melanoma has spread to her lung and liver. Any treatment for the metastises, however, will have to wait until Mara's incapacitation has been been addressed and she has healed from the surgery. First things first.
I asked about flowers. Right now Mara does not want flowers sent to her. For one thing, as Carol pointed out, they are not allowed in the ICU. As Mara is not expected to stay in her New York hospital room for long, she would prefer that we wait until she is back in Washington. Needless to say, right now is also not a good time to call. She and I spoke ever so briefly tonight. For once I was voluble, Mara not. She cried. It is a scary moment.
Three and a half years ago I took this picture of her. We had just gotten to know each other.

What a fabulous photo David - Mara at her most carefree and happy. I love that expression. I can't even begin to imagine how you are feeling so far away. Sending a lot of love to you both. Difficult times...really difficult times. Let us know how we can best support both of you.

Thank you for sharing this, David. I can almost feel how the water must have felt around Mara and how free she probably felt when you took that picture. It is beautiful.

David,
We just want to thank you from here in Istanbul for being such a wonderful person through this all, and for being such a strong and supportive presence in Mara's life. Our prayers are with all of you, and mostly, of course, with Mara. By the way, that is the most lovely picture of Mara you have posted. Please keep us posted. Julia
Mara. I will be praying as best I know how all day tomorrow for you to come through the surgery with flying colors. I am thinking of you, your family and David constantly and am sending all my love. I am holding you in my heart. So are Mark and Samson and Eliot. You are cherished, dear one. With love, Jo
Mara, you are so loved and admired by so many amazing people. What a revelation (though hardly a surprise) to see you enrich all of us with your wit, humor, and courage.
David, many thanks for sharing that beautiful photo. It prompted me to dust off an old photo album from Madison, and of course her smile always jumps off the page.
Mara, we're all keeping you so close in our hearts.
Lots of love,
Andrew

mara: much love and hugs and fighting thoughts from dc. i wore black fishnets to the state department today in your honor - couldn't come up with anything else, and the news this morning put me in a punk rock fight the man (or little cancer guys) mood. my thoughts are with you. judy
David - many thanks for keeping Mara's fan club so well informed of our heroine. And the photo is fabulous.
Dearest Mara, as Laura G says, so many of us are holding you close and we do hope you feel it (well, not in a crushing way, because there are so many of us :)). By the way, I was thinking in the shower yesterday that it is because of you that the whole 6 degrees of separation thing is probably legit. You've got love all over the globe, Mara. xoxo Julie
Mara,
What a beauty you are! This picture perfectly captures the free flowing energy and beauty of your spirit. Sending you lots of love and holding this image of you in my mind.
David,
Perfect photo!
Love to you both, Malia
That photo of Mara, radiant in her skin, incandescent, swimming with arms outstretched to embrace whatever comes...what a metaphor for Mara's spirit. David, Thank you so much for being there for us as well as for Mara!
Mara, may our thoughts and prayers form a magic net of love and protection from all around the globe.
Dear David,
Thank you so much for the lovely photo and for being by Mara's side all that time. We all greatly admire you and I am so glad you took over with the blog while Mara has to get all her energy and strength for the surgery and should not be distracted by reading or being read to, or dictating, or even thinking. I think this is THE PICTURE - Mara, relaxing on the water, feeling strong, free and relaxed, exactly the way she should feel upon all our love and strong vibes, making the perfect reliable mattress to support her above water (or whatever it is she has to be kept above!) - solid and strong. I'm sure she feels that way, and, funny enough, I feel happy and proud for her. David, you're a great person and since you'll probably be the first one to hold Mara after the surgery, I'm sure tehere's no doubt our love and best wishes for Mara's recovery will just flow through your loving arms right into her fragile body!
Be blessed, both of you!
Let all our love come your way!
Zlatna
David- Mara and all
