A Day With Crazy Liz McKeon

A number of people have hung around for a few days to do their own thing and check in on me when possible. After radiation this morning David and I discovered a new branch of Pain Quotidien around the corner from the hospital which we dove into for coffee. The radiation is quick and painless. The machine operators claimed to like my haircut! Unfortunately, the pattern right now seems to be a lot of morning nausea which I can't quite figure out. The doctor said that if the nausea were connected with the brain radiation, which is possible, it would come with headaches -- which I am not having. Perhaps it is the steroids and other drugs. At any rate, by popping a Kytril anti-nausea drug in the morning I can pretty much control the problem. I have been noticing my mouth getting quite dry, but I that is also par for the course and a good reason to keep on drinking. And yes, I can drink alcohol -- but frankly, it just isn't appealing right now with this dry mouth. So I think your body is very good at sending messages regarding what it does or doesn't need. My speech and numbness symptoms are the same but apparently that should not get better for a week or two.

David and I had a wonderful lunch at the apartment with my cousin Jamie before he headed back to Montreal, and my good friend Liz McKeon. I have some fun pics with Liz. Liz, by the way, gets 100% credit for this blog idea. She just went and signed me up for it. That forced me to learn how to use it. Liz showed up today laden with presents and loving cards from my colleagues at USAID in Washington DC. They all chipped in a got me a set of pre-paid debit cards to help defray costs for me these days and help me do some enjoyable things like not feel guilty going out to dinner! That is the photo with me in shock from the generosity. Liz also brought crazy Judy Dunbar's wigs along for a try. Don't think, Judy, that I won't use them. I love 'em! You'll get them back when I am haired again. Liz and I snuck away for a manicure and finally, Liz and David and I took a walk to Central Park for cheese and fruit at the refurbished Boat House. It is a really short walk from Larry's and Suzy's and a piece of heaven -- I feel like I am sitting in a modern-day Renoir painting every time.

Good morning Mara! The hair cutting party and your purple wig was so awesome. Truly a Mara experience. Only you can pull that off (no pun intended). Thanks for sharing so much about the events going on in your life. It helps those of us that can't be there to share the time with you via technology. And, it is great seeing that smile of yours and I can just imagine your laughter. Your laughter echos throughout USAID. Keep the pictures and your notes to all of us coming. Love you! Sheila
