Jerusalem and Istanbul
Mara's father came for a visit in November of 2006. Here they are in front of the Damascus Gate in Jerusalem.
Mara took me to Istanbul later that year. We spent New Year's eve with her friend Julia and family. Mara loved showing the city to me. She seemingly took me everywhere. Of course we visited the Hagia Sophia, but also the Blue Mosque, a much quieter place. Here she stands in the garden behind it.
We crossed the Bosphorus; the boatride had been one of Mara's favorite things when she lived in the city (if you don't see Mara's silhouette, click on the image).
On the last day we went for a long walk in a big park.

Oh, David. We do remember how Mara showed you her Istanbul, that mid-winter. How I wish I could find the beautiful photos of you and Mara on New Year's Eve, on Julia's sofa. (But I can't.) These are haunting photos, all the more so being black and white.
